The remote mountain paradise, characterized by mild temperatures that reach around 25 degrees in September and few tourists, recently won the title of the world’s most peaceful country. It’s impossible to find peace in the midst of a busy, industrialized world, but a few picturesque and remote countries seem to excel at it, and one name stands out.
But how can we accurately measure the “peace” of a country? Travel company Go2Africa recently conducted a study on the topic and compiled a list of the ten most peaceful tourist destinations based on a number of factors. Criteria that were considered included population and tourism density, rural and protected land area, and traffic conditions. According to the company, the data was collected from various sources such as electronic databases, global surveys and government reports.
Bhutan tops the list with a tranquility score of 89.44. Bhutan is known to the world as the “Secluded Kingdom” and it did not open its doors to tourists until 1974.

The Go2Africa website states: “Located in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, the country is known for its amazingly preserved landscape; visitors can only access it through licensed local tour operators and must pay a daily sustainable development fee.”

This country ranks very high in terms of natural land density, as it has an area of 39,041 square kilometers that includes mountains, forests, terraced valleys and sparsely populated highlands, in addition to a particularly large percentage of protected areas.
