A Massachusetts judge has declared a mistrial in the murder of Lindsay Clancy’s three young children after a jury decided after a week of deliberations that they could not reach a unanimous verdict on Clancy’s criminal responsibility for killing her children.

The issue attracted widespread attention and caused sharp divisions among Americans, prompting even the President of the United States to comment on it.

The courtroom was in a frenzy as the fate of the case and Clancy’s future hung in the balance.

Clancy’s attorney led a last-ditch effort to stall the appeals and force a jury to reach a verdict, but the effort was unsuccessful. A hearing later this month could determine the next step in the case.
