A Russian general was seriously injured in an assassination attempt.
On September 3, there was a shooting attempt in the Russian city of Engels, as a result of which a soldier was hit by several bullets and was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. Several media outlets reported that the victim was Major General Nikolai Varbakhovich, commander of the Russian Air Force’s 22nd Heavy Bomber Division. It is believed that the assailant opened fire before fleeing on a motorcycle. The incident is currently being investigated by the Russian Investigative Committee.
Just three days before the assassination, Ukraine formally accused General Varbakhovich of orchestrating a July 2024 rocket attack on Kyiv’s Ukhmatdet Children’s Hospital that killed three people and seriously damaged several treatment units. After the Engels incident, President Zelensky announced that Ukraine would carry out asymmetric operations in response to Russia. Moscow has not yet made an official comment.
