The United Nations is getting a new global map.
The UN General Assembly voted in favor of a “matographic correction” resolution aimed at scrapping the 16th-century Mercator projection and replacing it with the 2018 Flat Earth projection. Supported by 164 countries and with only the United States voting against, the resolution proposed by the African Union and the Bahamas seeks to accurately represent the continents’ land areas, namely to eliminate the “shrinkage” of African territory.
The ancient Mercator projection magnified regions farther from the equator, making Greenland appear the size of Africa, even though it was actually fourteen times smaller. This objection is seen as promoting “Eurocentric” thinking. Although the UN resolution is non-binding, the outcome of the vote is expected to help update school curricula and technology platforms globally.
