Le Monde: What does the recognition of the Palestinian state mean for France?

Le Monde said French President Emmanuel Macron’s “historic” commitment to recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly next September has sparked mixed reactions at a time when inaction and procrastination are no longer acceptable with the continued genocide in Gaza and the normalization of ethnic cleansing by the Israeli government.

The French newspaper explained in its editorial that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has always provoked different and sometimes contradictory reactions in the country, as the right and extreme right have chosen to align themselves with Israel’s position, even though it is led by a coalition that calls for the destruction of Gaza and the annexation of the West Bank and Egypt.

According to him, these three threats are no longer just an imaginary scenario, because the destruction of Gaza will take place before everyone’s eyes, amid the scandalous closure imposed by Israel.

There is also an ongoing annexation of the West Bank, supported by legions of extremist settlers, supported by an extremist nationalist government that seeks to make ethnic cleansing normal after decades of establishing it as a fait accompli.

Le Monde believed that this reminder of reality and the brutality of the terrible facts is necessary to understand Macron’s decision, at a time when it is no longer possible to defend the French position, that is, recognition that ends in a regional settlement negotiated by the two sides, because the door to this possibility was closed a long time ago to save the solution of the two states.

The only argument in favor of recognizing Palestine is not to try to stop this deterioration Without the slightest guarantee of success, but without a commitment to the values that Paris has always claimed to uphold, starting with supporting the legitimate aspirations of Palestinians for self-determination in land that Israel seized by force in 1967, the decision said.

Le Monde: The total destruction of Gaza is being achieved before everyone’s eyes, amid the scandalous closure imposed by Israel.

The two-state solution – according to Le Monde – guarantees the imminent defeat of Hamas as it strengthens Israel’s legitimacy following its recognition by the Palestine Liberation Organization. According to France’s Le Monde, it is a guarantee against this deterioration that will prompt – if not stop – Israel from abandoning its democracy and imposing a veritable apartheid regime on the enclaved Palestinians.

The newspaper concluded that abandoning these French values - on the pretext that defending them is a risk – is closer to surrender, and was surprised that criticism of Macron’s position came from within the ranks of his Gaullist authority, because (the state’s admission) palestine, Either this is an injustice that must be avoided, or it is the only solution to save first the Palestinians and secondly to save the Israelis from themselves.
